A Meditation Sala or Pavilion called “The Bamboo Cathedral”

This meditation sala for our lovely client Khunying Noi is situated on top of a hill in northern Chiang Mai. As she is a practicing Buddhist, the space was designed with the purpose to facilitate spiritual practice. To lift the practitioners feelings, the inside was designed like a dome of a cathedral. Bamboo arches are converging under the domes ceiling. They carry a lifted off top with sky lights like a wheel.

Next to the main sala is a bathroom with showers and toilets in separated spaces for ladies and gentlemen. It has a striking bamboo roof on top an adobe building with decorative bottles in the wall. Next to the bathroom is another smaller bamboo building that hides the water tank and an even smaller one for the well.

The whole ensemble is adjacent to a previous project, the wine tasting sala. All buildings together give the impression of a naturally grown mountain village.
